Mr. Mário Branco Lopes DE MATOS
A Mozambican raised Portuguese, Mr. de Matos possesses over 40 years’ experience as an agriculturist devoting his entire professional career to Africa, more specifically Angola, Burkina Faso, Congo Braza, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt; Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea,, Guinea-Bissau, Iran, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, in Asia Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand and Papua New Guinea, in Central North and South America Brazil, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and USA; in Europe in England, France, Germany, Portugal and Oceania Australia. Participates in project appraisals and evaluations, prefeasibility and feasibility studies of large agriculture projects with specialists of Schaffer International and other firms in the following areas: site selection, major soil physical and chemical features identification, meteorological data evaluation, crop growth, yield estimates, harvest cycle and duration, overall crop agriculture husbandry, chemical weed control, crop quality and recoveries estimates, mechanical agricultural operations and labor cost estimates, variety selection, irrigation water needs, quantities, and frequencies, drainage systems, implementation studies and lay outs, harvest and transport operations, commercial crop yields, major production factors interpretation and analyses, introduction of intercropping with food crops in irrigated estates, agricultural use of industry by products, crop processing added value, agro forestry development and leguminous trees inoculation and introduction in Out Growers areas. Also specializes in data collection and\ interpretation in a multitude of social, technical and cultural environments, identification of the socio-economic aspects of development, especially the relationships between nutrition, gender, household food security and poverty reduction and developing innovative solutions through careful analysis of available resources. Experienced in the design and development of capacity building activities, as well as organizing and managing workshops and conducting “on the job” training programs for professionals.
Mario received his Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Sciences in 1975 from Escola Superior Agraria Dr. J. A. Lacerda, at Vila Pery, Mozambique and is a member of the American Society of Sugar Cane Technologists – Louisiana Division; Australian Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Australia; S.A. Sugar Technologists Association, South Africa; Associação Portuguesa de Ciências Agrárias, Portugal; Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa, Portugal; Soils Sciences Society of Nigeria.
